Neohance case study cover featuring a gas detector installed on AVOXT’s green hydrogen electrolyser test bench in Eindhoven.

How Neohance supported AVOXT’s electrolyser test bench in Eindhoven.

AVOXT develops advanced electrolyser solutions to make green hydrogen a more sustainable and affordable alternative to fossil fuels. To validate the performance and safety of its technology, the company required accurate and reliable gas analysis for its test bench in Eindhoven. Neohance supported AVOXT by selecting suitable gas detection and analysis technologies, enabling accurate gas-crossover measurement under changing operating conditions.

About AVOXT

Client: AVOXT
Location: High Tech Campus Eindhoven, the Netherlands
Industry: Green hydrogen technology
Application: Electrolyser testing and gas-crossover analysis

AVOXT is a hydrogen technology company developing advanced electrolyser solutions to support the global energy transition. Its mission is to make green hydrogen not only a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, but also an affordable one.

To validate the performance and safety of its electrolyser technology, AVOXT needed to accurately measure gas crossover. Reliable gas analysis was essential for quantifying even very low gas concentrations, comparing performance results and demonstrating the advantages of its technology with confidence.

Why Gas Analysis Matters

Gas crossover: the core challenge

During electrolysis, small amounts of hydrogen can enter the oxygen stream, while oxygen can enter the hydrogen stream. Accurately measuring this crossover is essential for understanding the performance and safety of an electrolyser.

Safety across the operating range

AVOXT needed to maintain gas crossover below the 2% safety threshold while still being able to detect very low concentrations approaching 0%.

This required measurement technologies that could provide sensitive and dependable results across the full operating range of the test bench.

Confident technology validation

Reliable gas analysis allows test results to be compared with confidence. This supports accurate performance evaluation, technology validation and the continued development of AVOXT’s electrolyser technology.

The Challenge

Measuring both gas streams

AVOXT required suitable analysis solutions for measuring:

  • Hydrogen in the oxygen stream
  • Oxygen in the hydrogen stream

Each side of the application had different technical requirements and therefore required a carefully selected measurement solution.

Stable results under changing conditions

The analysers needed to maintain reliable accuracy despite variations in humidity and fluctuating background nitrogen concentrations.

These changing conditions can affect measurement stability, making it essential to select technologies capable of delivering dependable results throughout the testing process.

Finding the right technical and financial fit

The challenge was to identify gas analysis solutions that met AVOXT’s technical requirements and budget constraints while providing the right fit for each side of the application.

Rather than applying one measurement technology across the complete system, Neohance evaluated the specific requirements of each gas stream and recommended a combination of complementary solutions.

The Solution

Two Technologies, One Complete Solution

Neohance selected two different technologies to provide suitable oxygen and hydrogen measurement across AVOXT’s electrolyser test bench.

This combined approach allowed each gas stream to be measured using technology suited to its specific operating conditions and measurement requirements.

“Neohance was able to recommend the most suitable gas analysis solutions for both the oxygen and hydrogen sides of our application, ensuring optimal performance and fit for purpose.”

Sensitron SMART 3G-C2 LD

The Sensitron SMART 3G-C2 LD was equipped with an O₂ electrochemical sensor with a measuring range of 0–25% vol.

The detector provides oxygen monitoring on the hydrogen side of the application, supporting reliable measurement across the required operating range.

Archigas TCD3000 Si G1/2 Gas Analysers

Thermal-conductivity gas analysers were configured for precise hydrogen and oxygen measurement.

The analysers were supplied with adjusted measuring ranges to support sensitive and reliable gas-crossover analysis despite variations in humidity and fluctuating background nitrogen concentrations.

By configuring the analysers around the requirements of the application, Neohance helped AVOXT achieve a more suitable balance between sensitivity, measurement stability and overall system performance.

The Results

The implemented solution improved AVOXT’s ability to measure and evaluate gas crossover during electrolyser testing.

Improved accuracy

More precise measurement of low-level gas crossover during electrolyser testing.

Stable measurements

Reliable gas analysis despite variations in humidity and fluctuating background nitrogen levels.

Reduced uncertainty

More dependable data for performance evaluation and technology validation.

Low-level detection

Improved measurement of crossover concentrations approaching 0%.

Together, these improvements strengthened AVOXT’s confidence in the integrity of its test results and supported the continued validation and development of its electrolyser technology.

What the Client Said

“Neohance provided great technical guidance, from the selection of the sensors to their implementation into the test-bench. They first took the time to thoroughly understand our challenges before proposing the most suitable solution. After delivery of the sensors, they continued to provide ongoing technical support until the system was fully operational.”
